A private EPUB reader in your browser
What local-first means when you open an EPUB, TXT, or HTML file with Mark & Meter.
When you choose a book, the browser reads the file and a worker extracts its text locally. The reader stores a copy in your browser’s local database so it can reopen without an upload or account.
What stays on your device
- The original book’s extracted words and chapter boundaries.
- Your progress, settings, and reading statistics.
- Backup files you explicitly export.
What Mark & Meter does not do
There is no book-upload endpoint, remote content backend, account system, sync service, ad network, or AI processing. Public pages use a self-hosted, pageview-only Umami tracker; the app sends no book content, analytics, or custom reading events.
Local storage is not magic
Browser storage can be cleared, limited, or evicted. Export a metadata backup before changing browsers or clearing site data. Backups intentionally omit extracted word arrays, so they are not a copy of your books.
